Rebuilding a legacy

Binna Burra Lodge has long held a special place in the hearts of travellers, hikers, nature lovers and generations of Queensland families.

Set high in the ancient rainforest of Woonoongoora – Lamington National Park, Binna Burra is one of Australia’s most iconic nature-based destinations.

Following years of devastation caused by bushfires, cyclones and severe storms, the restoration of this iconic destination has been both a significant challenge and an inspiring journey of resilience, collaboration and renewal.

A key part of that journey has been the successful partnership between Binna Burra Lodge and NthStar Constructions, who were appointed to rebuild all six of our Tiny Wild Houses and deliver restoration works across the Safari Tents and surrounding outbuildings.

The project represented far more than a construction job. It was an opportunity to help restore an important piece of Australia’s natural and cultural heritage while carefully balancing sustainability, design integrity and the unique character of the mountain retreat.

“From the beginning, it was important that every part of the rebuild respected the spirit and history of Binna Burra,” said Louanne Byrnes, General Manager at Binna Burra Lodge.

“NthStar Constructions understood that immediately. Their team approached the project with professionalism, care and a genuine appreciation for what this place means to so many people.”

The completed works have played a major role in bringing approximately 50 per cent of the accommodation offering back online, including the restored and refurbished Safari Tents, which have quickly become a favourite among guests seeking an immersive rainforest escape.

The restoration has also helped support local tourism and the broader Scenic Rim community, welcoming visitors back to one of Queensland’s most treasured nature-based destinations.

For Binna Burra, the project reflects a broader vision for the future, one centred on sustainability, resilience and meaningful guest experiences connected to nature.

“The collaboration has been incredibly positive,” said Byrnes.

“Projects like this rely on strong partnerships and shared values. Together, we’ve been able to carefully restore accommodation that not only reconnects guests with the landscape, but also honours the legacy of Binna Burra for future generations.”

Today, guests once again gather around fire pits beneath the stars, wake to birdsong in the rainforest canopy and experience the remarkable beauty of Woonoongoora and the Gold Coast Hinterland.

The restoration marks another important chapter in Binna Burra’s story, one built through community support, thoughtful partnerships and a deep commitment to preserving one of Australia’s truly special places.
