Discovering Nature through Printmaking

Artist Workshop

Inspired by Nature, the workshop will teach the participants to capture the diverse flora from around Binna Burra through Printmaking techniques loosely based on Japanese Gyotaku (fish printing).

We will be using plants instead of fish as subject matter. Your tutor will share ideas and techniques developed over the last 2 years that can be taken home and used as no specialist equipment is required. Printing on rice paper we aim to complete at least one print and start a second to finish at home. The workshop is suitable for beginners through to established printmakers.

Your Facilitator

Andrew Watson studied fine arts and completed post-graduate studies in Printmaking at the Queensland College of Art. After a successful workshop in 2022, your tutor is looking forward to returning again in 2023. Andrew is a practising artist and exhibits at least 3 times per year in the Northern Rivers of NSW. Inspired by the Nature, Andrew’s work represents plant communities both native (off Bundjalung Country) and exotic species, often from his own eclectic garden. His work is represented in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, USA and Japan.

How this fits into our Art. Nature. Science. Program

Art, Nature and Science has long been part of the Binna Burra ethos. This workshop continues in the tradition of teaching participants to look at the environment surrounding them and develop their observations to capture plants, some with Gondwana lineage, in their works therefore recording this truly unique environment for posterity.
