Richard Groom, the youngest son of Arthur Groom (co-founder of Binna Burra Lodge and the National Parks Association of Queensland) grew up at Binna Burra. Richard’s book, The View Through the Windscreen, provides a unique insight into the history of Binna Burra and the pioneering men and women who created a Lodge on the edge of Lamington National Park. It is also a story of personal love and loss, of success and failure, of fortune and fire.
Description
In June 1940, Richard Groom was three weeks old when his mother, Marjorie, carried him up the steep and narrow track to Binna Burra, perched on the summit of Mt Roberts, to meet his father, Arthur, and brothers, Donn and Tony. Much of Richard’s working life was spent as a coach driver on the highways and back roads of Australia and New Zealand, introducing his passengers to the hidden gems of the great southern lands. Despite all the kilometres travelled, Richard has always been drawn back to Mt Roberts, as if by a magnet; all too aware that his father’s vision to provide access for all to the wilderness was a dream big enough to be carried on forever.
