For the first time, the world authority on sustainable tourism will conduct its international standards program in Australia.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) has confirmed Binna Burra Lodge in the Lamington National Park will be the location for the inaugural three day intensive training programme from 16 to 18 October, 2019.

GSTC is the not-for-profit international organisation endorsed by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation to serve as the guiding body for sustainability standards and policies in the travel and tourism sector. It establishes and manages global sustainable standards, known as the GSTC Criteria. These are the guiding principles and minimum requirements that any tourism business or destination should aspire to reach in order to protect and sustain the world’s natural and cultural resources.

The training covers tourism as a tool for sustainable development, sustainability best practices and the GSTC Criteria, the world’s leading standard for tourism sustainability, as well as key topics such as global trends in sustainable tourism, sustainability marketing, and sustainable tourism product development and management

The event will be held during World Heritage Week at Binna Burra Lodge in the Lamington National Park which commences with a two day mini-conference on Protected Areas and Sustainable Tourism on 14 & 15 October 2019.

‘We’re delighted to have been selected as the location for this first international standards training program on sustainable tourism to be held by the GSTC in Australia’ said Steve Noakes, Chair of the Board of Directors at this iconic Australian nature-based tourism enterprise. ‘We also hope to attract participants from around the Asia Pacific region to join us for the three day programme.’

He added: ‘Sustainability is not an after thought at Binna Burra. Since our founding in 1933, Binna Burra Lodge has been guided by its commitment to preserve the integrity of the Lamington National Park – now part of the Gondwana Rainforest of Australia World Heritage Listed site.

At Binna Burra, we continue our constant mission to improve innovative sustainability practices into our everyday operations, to support our natural and cultural heritage, and to engage with our local community in positive ways.’
